Picks made from the shells of Eastern Hawskbill sea turtles have long been coveted by guitarists because of their beauty, feel, and the beautiful tone they impart. In recent years, however, the availability of legal tortoise shell has plummeted and many guitarists have moved on to new picks because of true tortoise shell's prohibitive cost or ethical concerns. John Greven, an experienced luthier, spent decades trying to find a tortoise substitute that didn't sacrifice appearance, feel, or tone. New Tortis picks, now cut and distributed by Dave Skowron of the Red Bear Trading Co. are the final culmination of those years of searching. This material could be described as cultured tortoise shell and many people find that they are unable to differentiate between New Tortis and the "real thing".
